What is Ultrasound?

Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of the inside of your pet’s body. You might know it from pregnancy scans in humans—but it’s just as valuable for pets. Ultrasounds let us see organs and tissues without causing any discomfort or harm.

The procedure involves a handheld device that is gently moved across your pet’s skin, sending sound waves that bounce back to form images on a screen. Dr. Zibaee and our team use this technology to perform abdominal ultrasounds and echocardiography (heart ultrasounds) right here at Summit Vet Hospital.

How Do Ultrasounds and X-Rays Differ?

Ultrasounds and x-rays serve different purposes. Ultrasounds are excellent for viewing soft tissues like organs and muscles, while x-rays are better suited for solid structures such as bones. This makes ultrasound a valuable complement to x-rays in diagnosing various conditions.

What Conditions Make Ultrasound Useful?

Ultrasound can help diagnose many pet health issues, including:

  • Unusual blood or urine test results
  • Inconclusive lab tests
  • Suspected internal injuries, like from accidents
  • Detection of diseases such as cancer or thyroid problems
  • Monitoring complicated pregnancies
  • Locating swallowed foreign objects

Not every vet is trained to perform pet ultrasounds, but you can trust the experienced team at Summit Vet Hospital. If you have questions or want to schedule an ultrasound, call us at (408) 353-1113 today.
